  • Two-time region defensive player of the year in junior college…might be the best shortstop in the NAIA…can hit anywhere in the lineup, but likely to hit third. At East Central CC, he was both All-Conference and All-Region performer in each of the past two seasons…hit .465 last year.

Jackson, Tenn. - 6/4/2002 - Rolando Agosto became the second Union University Bulldog to be drafted in the 2002 First Year Player Draft held in New York City. Agosto was drafted in the 15th round by the San Diego Padres.

Agosto, a 5-foot-9 shortstop, was the 445th player to be taken overall in the draft. He played for the Bulldogs in 2002 as a junior after transferring from East Central Community College. Agosto hit .340 on the season with 14 doubles, six triples, 10 homeruns, and 45 RBI. He was second on the team in homeruns, doubles, and triples. Agosto was also second on the team with 12 stolen bases. He was named a TranSouth all-conference performer in his only season at Union. Agosto set new Union records for assists in a game with 12 and games played in a season with 64.

Coach Rushing knew Agosto was good enough but didn't know when he might go. "He was close to being drafted after his two junior college years", says Coach Rushing. Rushing adds, "Rolando hit really well for us last season and also helped us on defense. He gets to the balls that nobody else can get which provided us with some really entertaining plays in the field"
